Are you looking for new ways to add a little sparkle to your creative writing? Maybe you felt recently that you’re producing the same kind of words and sentences time and time again? Or maybe you’ve not been able to write anything lately?
Here are 7 different ways you can revitalize your creative writing today:
- Capture more ideas. We all have an endless flow of ideas, but if we don’t record them, we simply forget them, meaning it feels like we never had them in the first place. Use a pocket notebook, call it your Ideas Journal, and keep it with you to jot down ideas as soon as they appear. You’ll be amazed how many start to flow to you.
- Read a variety of materials. One of the best ways to learn new ways of writing is to look at what other people do. I’m not suggesting you copy others people’s style outright, but read a variety of materials, see what you enjoy about them and why. Then look at how you can adapt these techniques to enhance your own writing.
- Be open to inspiration. Wherever you go there’s inspiration around you that could lead to new writing. But only if you’re open to it. If you’re walking around like you have a pillow wrapped around your head, you won’t appreciate the potential writing ideas in whatever is going around you at any time.
- Write from different perspectives. Imagine you’re a famous character from history, and write about a day in your life. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know your chosen character’s life in fine detail, use this exercise to experiment and explore, and as a springboard to write from new perspectives.
- Use each of your senses. We each experience the world through our 5 senses. So an excellent way of inspiring your writing is to focus on just one of these senses at a time and write what you’re experiencing in fine detail. Do the same for each sense and this heightened awareness and appreciation can’t help but enrich everything you write from then on.
- Use creative writing prompts. Many people avoid using prompts because they feel it’s a short cut or cheat. Writing prompts are simply a starting point, though; what and how you write after that is completely your own creation. Try a variety of prompts to take your writing in directions you may not have considered.
- Form writing collaborations. Link up with another writer with the aim of writing a joint project, to encourage and inspire you both. Don’t sabotage the project with unrealistic expectations -- just write back and forth with the intention of exploring and experimenting with new ways of writing.
You can use any of these 7 ways to enhance your creative writing today. Which one are you going to try first?
