If you’ve ever been stuck on the sofa or in the shower during a sudden power outage, you’ve likely wished to see in the dark. Whatever your reason, there are ways to improve your vision. Follow these steps and you will be able to see in the dark.
- Practice in dim light. If you know ahead of time that you will be spending some time in the dark, you can prepare. Gradually dim the lights. Practice at home for an hour each day if you have the time. Make your home as dark as possible and let your eyes adjust. This practice will help improve your eye strength. The more time you spend in the dark, the easier your eyes will adjust.
- Take Vitamin A. Some studies have shown that Vitamin A helps vision, so taking a supplement may help.
- When shifting from light to dark, close your eyes tight. Hold them closed for at least thirty seconds before opening them in the dark area.
- Wait for your eyes to adjust. It may take anywhere from fifteen to thirty minutes for your eyes to adjust to full darkness. Stay still for that time if you can, to allow your eyes to adjust. The stillness also helps your other senses like hearing and smell compensate for limited visibility.
- Look for basic shapes. In full dark, you won’t be able to see colors or detail even after your eyes adjust. Instead of squinting to try to make out details, look for basic shapes.
- Track movement. When looking for general shapes, also look for movement. Your eyes will pick up movement easier than focusing on still objects.
- Don’t try too hard. When your eyes have adjusted to the dark, you might have a tendency to try to stare or squint to see clearer. Instead, try to relax. Night vision works better if you keep your eyes relaxed and moving instead of tense and staring.
Seeing in the dark is possible. All it takes is a little practice and a lot of patience. Just relax and you will get the hang of it in no time.

These are great suggestions since we have spent many a night in the dark! Power outages seem to be part of the landscape when you live in the country. Thanks for the suggestions.
