Taking a good picture is always a matter or technique and composition, rather than the type and quality of camera that you use. Some of the most interesting and popular pictures taken in the past have not depended on complex technology, but are the outcome of the creativity and imagination used by the photographers. Of course, a good camera does help, but you can take great pictures even with a simple box camera. Technology just makes it easier for both beginners and professionals alike to take good pictures. Listed below are some tips on how to take good and memorable pictures.
Step 1:

Camera level. Always hold the camera level with the subject's eye. This means you need to automatically adjust your position to get a good picture. For children and animals, you'll need to go down, but if you were trying to capture a tall tree or the distant hills, you will have to position yourself at a higher point.

Step 2:

Background. It is best to avoid a cluttered background behind the subject of your picture. In fact, the plainer the background, the more clearer and attractive the subject of your picture will look. While making a plain background is a simple task indoors, you may have to take some extra efforts on outdoor shots. Try and position the subject in a manner such that there are no obstructions in the background - cluttered leaves, poles, twigs, branches, etc.

Step 3:

Using the flash. Always try and use the flash on your camera, even if it is an outdoor shot. Use of the flash will help to lighten the shadows on the face, when the sun is directly overhead or behind the subject. On less bright days, the flash will help in brightening up the subject's features and make them stand out distinctly against the rest of the background.

Step 4:

The closer the better. When taking photographs, it is preferable to get as close to the subject as you can. You can do this physically by moving in close, or use the zoom lens of the camera to get as close as you can such that the subject fills up the frame. This will help in removing background disturbances and highlight fine details of the subject.

Step 5:

Taking vertical pictures. By and large, when using a camera, we are programmed to taking pictures with the camera in standard position. Changing the position and taking vertical pictures of your subject, not only provides a different perspective, it is also required when taking portrait pictures of people or photographing tall objects.

Step 6:

Locking focus. Before taking a picture, center the viewfinder on your subject, press the shutter half way, frame the picture again and then press down the shutter button fully to take your shot.

Step 7:

Check the flash range. Before taking pictures, check the camera's flash range from the accompanying manual. In most cameras, the standard flash range is about ten feet. Make sure your subject is within this range before you press the shutter button. If a picture is taken beyond the flash range, it will look quite dark.

These are some basic tips to ensure that you take good pictures with your camera. As you become proficient with these techniques, you can move on to some advanced techniques which will help you understand picture composition, lighting techniques, self-timer usage, etc.
