Guitar Hero is a rhythm and simulation type game developed by Neversoft. RedOctane first published it in 2005, and it then was acquired by Activision in 2006. The game uses a handheld guitar-shaped device to mimic an actual guitar. The goal of the game is to match the notes on-screen to the colored buttons on the controller, which represent frets. The frets also serve as guitar scales.

The game uses shred guitar techniques like pull-offs and hammer-ons. It has a whammy bar to simulate an electric guitar’s pitch bend effect. Sony’s Playstation 2 is the first console to incorporate the Guitar Hero game into their gaming library. With its popularity, versions for other gaming consoles like the PS3, Wii, Xbox 360 and Nintendo DS became available. It now has a version for Windows and Mac platforms.

You do not have to pay guitar tuition to play Guitar Hero. It also does not need any complicated guitar instructions. Here are some tricks to help you in playing Guitar Hero.

  1. Start with the basics. If it is your first time to play Guitar Hero, start by playing the tutorial mode. This will help you learn all those basic things in playing the game.
  2. Choose familiar songs. Once you are comfortable with the basics, start playing the career mode. Try to choose songs you know first. Doing this can give you an advantage. This is because you already have in mind how the song goes. It will enable you to focus on what to press on the guitar controller rather than what the song is.
  3. Know when to use the Star-Power. The Star-Power is a special feature in the Guitar Hero game. It enables the user to increase the health gauge faster and double the score multiplier. Knowing when to use the Star-Power feature can greatly affect the outcome of the game. Use the Star-Power on parts where you are familiar with the tune and not at times when you might miss a note. This can double up your points and increase your health bonus. It will also help you to recover from the red zone back to the green zone easily.
  4. Do not tap. For beginners, tapping the fret buttons on the controller instead of holding them can be more difficult. Holding the fret can give you more focus on strumming. It can also give you more time, especially if the note has longer passages.
  5. Assign fingers for each fret. Proper positioning of fingers can be an advantage in playing Guitar Hero. For the green and red buttons, use your index finger. For the yellow button, you can use your middle finger. Your ring finger and pinky can be used for the blue and orange buttons although this one takes practice. This method can be beneficial, especially for the hard and expert modes.

With all these tips, it is also important to make sure you have enough practice. If you  have an idea on how to play, you can start with the medium level of difficulty. It will enable you to learn all the essential skills needed to play the game.

Playing Guitar Hero may be difficult at first. With the help of these tips and a lot of practice, you do not need a guitar teacher to become a Guitar Hero master.
