So you want to go caroling but you're not sure where to go or who to take with you? Follows these easy steps to make a caroling trip to remember.

  1. Pick a nicely lit place to carol. The neighborhoods that have many lights put up everywhere are the ones you want to carol for. This is not only a safety precaution, but this also means that the people residing in this neighborhood have Christmas spirit and would love to stop and listen to bring back the feeling and tradition of Christmas. You don't have be a door-to-door caroler. You can also stand in the park singing as people pass by. Everyone knows how annoying Christmas shopping is, and I believe that it would relieve some stress for me if I heard a group of carolers singing about Christmas spirit as I was squeezing through a crowd of shoppers, so try caroling in the middle of the mall or out in front.
  2. Choose a reasonable time to go. I would suggest going caroling right after dinner when you know everyone is home and ready to relax with a cup of hot cocoa. This will add to their enjoyment of the evening.
  3. Take your family with you. Caroling with friends is a great way to spend a night of the holidays, but it would mean so much more to you and your family if you would invite them along instead. It gives you a great feeling knowing you are doing something as a family for the holidays.
  4. Choose traditional carols. People mostly want to hear the old time favorite Christmas songs like "O Holy Night" or "O Come All Ye Faithful". This takes people back to the original meaning of Christmas and they enjoy it much more. However, it would be cute to have your little brother or sister sing a verse of "Rudolph", "Frosty" or "Jingle Bells".
  5. Dress alike. Dressing alike as a family lets people know that there are still families out there that are close and like to be, and spend time together. Dressing alike adds to the effect of the lights glowing behind you while you are singing. You will look more unified as a group if you dress alike.
  6. Dress in Christmas colors. Dressing in holiday colors has a very large impact on how people see you as you are caroling. This also brightens any day and brings meaning back to the holiday season and being a family. Don't overdo it, of course, but maybe do the mother-daughter thing or the father-son thing where the girls dress alike and the boys dress alike.
  7. Bring refreshments. If you think you will be out in the cold for a while, I would suggest bringing along a thermos of hot chocolate to share with the family in between houses or songs.
  8. Take the time to remind yourself why you are there. Between houses or songs stop to look at the lights around you or the snow lightly falling from the sky and tell yourself how much it means to you to be there. It wouldn't hurt to tell your family how you feel either.
  9. Go home with a sense of wonder. Once you get home after caroling stop to think about how many people you sang for and what it meant to them. Just remind yourself that it's possible that you helped save the Christmas spirit of a person, couple, or even a family.

Take time this holiday season to think about how many people would enjoy the old fashioned caroling tradition, then go for it!
