Decorating for the holidays is the best opportunity of the year to get your creative juices going. But, an elaborate and well planned home or office display need not cost a fortune. One of the most economical decorations is a colorful window display including holiday frost that adds rich holiday design to both inside and outside the house.
To begin with, you will need some stencils. For people unfamiliar with free hand art, the stencil will provide you with perfect control of the frost. Stencil kits are a common item in arts and craft stores in November, and they are fairly economical to buy either separately or in a box. Then, you need some white or silver colored water soluble window paint. Rather than using a paintbrush, try cutting up a sponge and dab the color onto the window. By using quick pats, you will be able to control the color volume and perhaps create some shading for a 3-D effect. For a framing appearance, try covering the window corners and the lower pane only. This creates a melting frost look and leaves you inside space if you would like to add color.
Holiday frost window paints also come in bold colors with a heavy matte finish. Large stencils for Santas, reindeer and even alphabet characters to create a text will add some vibrant color to your holiday window. For interior windows, such as office glass, be sure your design is reversible. Lettering on a two way view will be a mess and a big letdown after all your hard work. Large, colorful objects work best for interior glass doors and windows.
For those with some art experience, you may not need the stencils, but you should have a rough draft to best utilize your space and color combos. Lettering can be tricky when you run out of space, so a little engineering will save you some grief. The main purpose of frosting a window is to bring color and quotations to glass. The design you choose is not as important as the color scheme, so select something easy to stencil and within your creative powers.
Clean up is easy with holiday frost. All you need is some sudsy dish soap, a few swipes with a sponge, and a garden hose to rinse. In addition to ease of use, the holiday frost stencils are durable, reusable and may last you for years.
