How To Make Kids' Halloween Costumes

Couple in Halloween costume

If Halloween is suddenly upon you and you still haven't figured out what your kids will be wearing, there are several simple and easy kids' Halloween costumes that you can learn how to make at home.

Of course, there are always the obvious choices for Halloween costumes such as a ghost using a sheet with eye holes cut out, or a superhero with a sheet tied around the neck for a cape, but here are some creative and unique ideas you may not have thought of for some great homemade kids' costumes.

  • Dirty Laundry: This Halloween costume consists of a laundry basket with a hole in the bottom cut out big enough for your child's hips to fit through. Suspender straps should be attached to the basket to hold it up around his or her waist. For this you can just use rope, or some sort of ribbon or fabric. Then, fill the basket with clothes and add in a detergent bottle for effect. Shorts on the head would be a nice touch. This costume is sure to get lots of laughs.
  • The Ocean: This costume is really simple, but also really cute. First, dress your kid head to toe in blue. Then, attach various fish and other ocean life. I would recommend making these from colorful sheets of craft foam, which can be cut into the shapes of fish and other ocean life such as seahorses or starfish. If you don't want to sew these on, they could just be glued with fabric glue, or even stapled if you're pressed for time.
  • Dinner: This is a very unique Halloween costume. To do dinner on the table, first you need a cardboard box. Cut a hole in the bottom of the box just barely big enough for your child's head to fit through, so that when put over the head upside down, it'll sit on the shoulders. Then, take a tablecloth and cut a hole in the very middle for the head. When put it over the box; the box now will look like a table. Make a plate (also with a hole in the middle) to go on the table which will make it look your child's head is what's for dinner. You should also glue silverware, a napkin, a drinking glass, and other food on the table to add to the overall look. You can make this food from craft foam or use fake food from a child's play set. Bon appétit!

Happy Haunting!
