How To Play Harmless April Fool's Day Pranks

April Fool's Day pranks are often hilarious, but sometimes they can go too far. If you plan to make an April fool out of your boss (or a friend or family member who happens to be faint of heart) you might want to play harmless April Fool's Day pranks, just to be safe. Here's how to do that.

  • Discuss your April Fool's joke with other people. That way, you'll get some idea whether your prank is harmless or if it goes too far. If your target is your boss or a co-worker, ask other co-workers if they think it's a good idea. If they hesitate, abort the mission. If they seem excited, all systems are go. The benefit of running your April Fool's Day prank by others is that they'll probably want to be involved, so then the heat doesn't go on you alone.
  • Ask other people for ideas. While you're talking to your friends, family and co-workers about your idea for an April Fool's Day prank, ask them what they have in mind. If you're looking for harmless pranks, it's probably a good idea to ask your older relatives or the little old ladies at work. They're bound to be savvy when it comes to April Fool's Day, and their pranks are likely to be quite harmless.
  • Don't compromise your April fool. In other words, don't pull a prank that could possibly be detrimental to the person you're fooling. A harmless prank means your victim shouldn't find himself having to clean shaving cream off his work desk. Even covering somebody's work station with toilet paper can be risky, especially if it's close to deadline and he or she is forced to clean up before getting back to work. A good rule of thumb is don't mess with other people's stuff.
  • Give your prank a happy ending. Too often, April Fool's Day pranks end with the revelation and a few chuckles. Why not prank someone with a reward? If your prank is to trick your dinner date into thinking you forgot your wallet, spring your April Fool's surprise by having the wait staff serve your wallet on a platter of desserts! After all, nothing defuses a potentially volatile April Fool's Day prank like dessert. The reward or happy ending will take your victim's mind off the fact that he or she was just made the butt of your April Fool's Day prank. The result is both harmless and delicious.
