A mousetrap is not as effective if you use the wrong bait. A lot of people still use cheese as bait but cheese does not always work. You can use different types of foods that have a high aroma in order to lure mice to the mousetrap. You may have to test different food items in order to know what the mice really want.
Here are some of the best baits to use for a mousetrap:
- Vanilla extract. Vanilla extract is an effective tool to use as a bait a mouse trap or a rat trap. What you will have to do is get a cotton ball and put about two to three drops of vanilla extract on the cotton ball. Place the cotton ball in an area on the mouse trap that will surely capture the mouse. Vanilla extract works as an excellent bait as it gives off a strong aroma that attracts rats and mice. This does not work well with squirrel traps and mole traps as these animals are attracted to different foods.
- Food on sticky paper. If you do not want to harm the mouse and capture it in a humane way, the best thing for you to use is sticky paper. Place caramels or chocolate syrup on the sticky paper to act as a bait for the mouse. You are sure to capture the mouse and keep it alive. This method is not as ideal for mouse control as there is still a chance that the mouse can escape the sticky paper.
- Peanut butter. A lot of people agree that peanut butter is the best bait to be used for a mouse trap. Mice are said to be attracted to foods that contain fat, grains and sweets. Peanut butter is the best choice of food that has all these qualities. You must choose peanut butter that will not turn runny when left out for a long time. It is advisable to use branded peanut butter. The best thing to do is to put a small container of peanut butter on the area where the mice usually pass. Leave peanut butter in that area for a few days without the mouse trap. The mouse will get used to the peanut butter and will be coming back for it. After a few days, you can dab peanut butter on the mouse trap and put it in the same area to be able to catch mice.
These are the top baits to use for a mousetrap. Some baits may work better than others. You might need to try different baits in order to see what the mice in your home are attracted to. The baits can work in as fast as a few minutes or it may be days before you catch your first mouse. If there is a mouse infestation in your house, you may have to consider calling an exterminator instead of using mousetraps as mice multiply fast and mousetraps can catch only a few mice.
