  • Milk. Get the freshest milk in the market. It should only be at most four days away from its selling day. You should consume the milk within one week. Meanwhile, milk in cans should be transferred to plastic or glass containers since leaving it in cans causes faster spoiling.
  • Cheese. If you want long-life cheese, you should opt to get the hard cheeses like Swiss or Cheddar. Soft cheeses will be rotten after seven days so you need to consume them within five days at most. For unopened cheese, you can store that in the refrigerator until needed.
  • Eggs. Enjoy fresh eggs if you use them within 3 weeks from the date of purchase. To make the eggs last that long, you should store them inside their original carton even if you put them in the fridge. Some people tend to put eggs in the kitchen cupboards, which is good but not better than the former option.
  • Fruits and vegetables. It is best to buy fruits and vegetables when they are in season because they are fresher and can last longer that way. Putting them inside the fridge will extend their life, too. But if you do, always remove the plastic as the condensed moisture might make them rot faster.
  • Beef and other meat. You can easily detect the fresh meat from not through its color. Fresh beef has a cherry red color while lamb is a slightly lighter brown. Chicken, on the other hand, should not have an oily skin. Immediately put the meat in the freezer especially if it is already chopped or ground. You can use a plastic container for the chopped meats while a hard plastic is fine for the whole dressed chicken or whole flesh.
  • Grain. Make sure to store grains inside a sealed storage container to avoid moisture. When safely stored, grain can last for some months.

  • Buy foods that can survive longer even without the fridge. These can be canned goods, instant foods, or jarred fruits.
  • Store food inside durable food containers or storage bins. Never ever leave your food inside the sacks because these are easily accessible to rodents, cockroaches, and moisture. Put them in a storage bin, instead. But make sure that this can be properly sealed.
  • Store some vitamins for the kids. Children's bodies are not capable of reserving nutrients no matter what delicious recipes you make them. A multi-vitamin is okay but you should add to the list the vitamin C to complete the requirements.
