Gnats, also known as fruit flies, are pesky little insects that make their homes near rotting materials. They are especially attracted to plant soil, rotting fruit and sink drains, and they prefer to lay their eggs in moist plant soil. Of course there are certain things you can do to avoid an infestation of gnats, such as getting rid of rotting fruit and keeping plant soil dry in between watering, but gnats will still make their way into your home. In order to get rid of these pesky creatures, you will need to build a gnat trap.
First, find a glass jar in your home. Remove the lid and wash the jar out with warm water and soap. The ideal glass jar will have a large opening, but any jar will do. Next, you will need to plant something of interest to the gnats into the bottom of the glass jar. Pour several tablespoons of apple cider vinegar or white vinegar into the bottom of the gnat trap.
Then cut out two pieces of saran wrap to fit over the opening of the glass jar. Place the saran wrap over the gnat trap and secure it using a rubber band. Make sure that the saran wrap is as tight as can be, as gnats can easily escape from the trap. Using something small and sharp, like a fork or toothpick, poke holes into the saran wrap. You want to poke the holes sporadically in the saran wrap so that they are not too close together.
Now that you have built a gnat trap, your ideal place to set it is where the gnats are infesting your house. The gnats will be attracted to the smell of the cider and will enter through the holes on the saran wrap. In order to keep the gnat trap fresh, add a teaspoon of fresh vinegar every few days.
Although less attractive, another way to build a gnat trap is by using an empty soda bottle. As with the jar, wash it out using warm water and soap. Then cut the bottle into two pieces using scissors. The bottom portion should be about 2 to 3 inches larger than the top piece. Instead of using apple cider vinegar as your weapon, plant a piece of old fruit on the bottom of the soda bottle.
Take the top part of the soda bottle and turn it upside down, inserting it into the bottom of the soda bottle and securing it in place. Using sturdy tape, seal the two bottles together so that there are no openings between the two bottles. This is where the gnats try to escape from, so it’s important to seal correctly. The neck of the bottle is where the gnats will fly into the gnat trap, but rarely fly back out of.
