How To Buy an Electric-Powered Rotary Mower

Mowing your lawn has never been easier with the wide range of lawn mower choices in the market today. There are riding mowers, gas-powered mowers, electric-powered rotary mowers and push reel mowers.

Electric-powered rotary mowers have circular blades that are inside a protective housing. You can use this for a lawn that does not need cutting below 2 inches. If you plan to go green, an electric mower is an environmentally friendly choice. Some have rechargeable batteries while others have a cord that you need to tote around.

If the electric-powered rotary mower is what you think you need, spend time to read this article so you know how to buy one. Remember that electric-powered rotary mowers are best for lawns that are no more than 1/3 acre in size.

  • Choose one that has a broad cutting swath. Compared to gas-powered mowers, electric mowers normally have narrow cutting swaths.
  • Select an electric-powered rotary mower based on the location of the bag. The bag is used to collect lawn clippings. You can choose a bag situated at the side or at the rear. The advantage of the rear bag is that it collects the lawn clippings more efficiently; it can hold more clippings. It also allows the electric-powered rotary mower to move around in tight spaces. However, keep in mind that the electric-powered rotary mowers with side-bags are less expensive that their rear-bag counterparts.
  • Evaluate the ease at which you can handle the grass catcher. Make sure to choose a brand and model that has an easy to remove, empty and replace grass catcher. You wouldn’t want to break into beads of sweat each time you empty the grass catcher.
  • Test the cutting height adjuster. Just like the grass catcher, the cutting height adjuster should be easy to fiddle with.
  • Find out how the safety feature works. The dead-man bail is a required feature that either turns off the engine or stops the blades each time you release the handle. Many usually prefer an electric-powered rotary mower that stops the blades. This saves you from having to restart the power each time you need to remove and empty the grass catcher. Check for other safety features as well.
  • Choose an electric-powered rotary mower based on its weight. Corded mowers tend to be lighter than battery-powered ones. The latter has to be recharged before you can finish your lawn.
  • Buy one within your price range. Corded electric-powered rotary mowers can cost less than $200. Cordless versions will set you back more than $200. You can also try to find discounts or rebates from retailers.
  • Seek guidance from other owners and users. Check the Internet for reviews, comments, and helpful buying and using tips regarding electric-powered rotary mowers. If a friend, family member or neighbor has one, ask if you can test drive their electric-powered rotary mover.
  • Buy one with a warranty. Ask the store clerk about service and parts as well.

Different types of lawn mowers have their own pros and cons. Majority of the electric mowers in the market cannot cut grass that are too thick, tall, or wet. But you don’t have to spend much time maintaining one as compared to a gas-powered mower. Plus they are quieter than their gas-guzzling cousins. When buying an electric-powered rotary mower, make sure to evaluate your lawn clipping needs so you can purchase the best one for you budget and your lawn.
