Caulking a kitchen sink is a must if you do not want it to leak and for it to stay sealed up. To caulk is to seal some parts of the tubing on the sink so that water and other liquids will not seep through it when in use. Some people will resort to calling a plumber in order to caulk a kitchen sink. This does not have to be the case. You can caulk your kitchen sink on your own. All you need are a few materials. You will also save money by doing this.
Here are the steps on how you can caulk a kitchen sink without the help of a plumber:
- Materials. Gather the materials that you will need for caulking. You can find these materials from your local hardware store. For caulking, you will need a small sharp knife, a screwdriver, alcohol, gloves, caulk, caulk gun and duct tape.
- Prepare the sink. The first thing that you have to do is to prepare the sink. If you have an old sink that you need to caulk, you will have to get rid of the dirt and grim on the tubes so that the caulking will be effective. Use your knife to do this. Get rid of all the grout that has built up over the years. After getting rid of the grout, spread some alcohol on the tubing and on the sink. This will kill the bacteria build up because of the moisture.
- Caulk the sink. Now, you can caulk the sink. Fill the caulk gun with the caulk that you have bought. Put a steady pressure when you push the caulk gun so that the caulk that will come out of the gun will be pretty even. Concentrate on the cracks on the sink. Make sure that you put caulk inside the cracks but be careful so that the caulk will not overflow outside the cracks.
- Cleaning up. Sometimes, you will not be able to control the flow of the caulk from the caulk gun and this will cause an overflow. Do not worry about this. You can clean the overflow and level it out with the use of a sharp knife but you have to wait until the caulk is completely dry. This may take up to a day or two. During the drying process, do not use the sink. Another thing to remember is to clean the caulk gun. Poke the hole on the caulk gun with a needle so that the caulk will not dry up and cover the hole. Afterwards, cover the tip of the gun using duct tape. This should preserve the caulk inside the gun.
