Changing the pulley and belt on a Sears Riding Mower may be difficult or such a challenge to do, but if you follow the instructions on the manual, you will find it an easy task. One rule of thumb in doing this is to keep in mind the proper way of assembling it, and to note down the order in which you disassemble and assemble the parts. But if you got a good memory, remembering how it was removed and done will be an advantage.
- Organize and prepare all the things that you'll need. If you have the mower's instruction manual, then that can help as a guide. You will also need a flathead screwdriver, pliers and wrench for loosening up the belt, and of course a new belt for your riding mower. Prior to this, you should already have bought new parts, using your mower's model number as a reference. Be careful in handling your riding mower, as your hands might get stuck in sharp, cutting surfaces of the mower.
- Locate the belt. Lower your riding mower's deck so that you will be easily able to take off the belt from the pulley of your engine. The belts are usually located in their belt keepers to keep them in place. For you to successfully remove it, use a screwdriver to loosen the belt up, so you can take it off.
- Change the belt. After successfully removing the old belt, you can now change the belt and replace it with a new one. Remove the deck itself so you will not have difficulties in installing the new one. Remember to engage your riding mower's parking brake, so it will not accidentally roll off, and because this will release the belt.
- Remove the battery box. While doing this, flip up the seat area and pull the battery box. Then detach the belt from the axle. This step must be done because the battery box covers the transaxle where the pulley is located.
- Take off the belt from the axle carefully. But before doing this, make sure that you have a visual memory or note that can assist you in returning the belt to its original place. If you are unsure, don't proceed. Proceed only when you already a reference to follow.
- Reinstall everything by doing the reverse order of the steps outlined above. You will have a much easier time if you have a visual picture of its original position so as to save time and energy. This can serve as your guideline so you will know if you missed something or set something up incorrectly. Check first before turning the engine on, Make sure that everything fits properly.
Frequent usage of your lawn mower can accelerate the wear of the belt and pulley, making these thin and squeaky. It is a must to change these parts as soon as maximum use is reached. Refer to your user's manual to determine the length of service of the belt and pulley. Regular maintenance ensures your mower is running efficiently, and will prevent damage.
