Rotary cutters are best used for cutting fabrics on flat surfaces and one of the best brands nowadays is Fiskars. A rotary cutter can help with creating projects, since it is accurate in cutting patterns and shapes. But to maintain its efficiency, it is necessary for one to maintain the sharpness of the blades. Follow these simple steps to achieve a very safe way of changing the blades of your Fiskars Rotary Cutter.
- Prepare all the things that you'll need. To avoid any delay in doing the replacement, have everything within easy reach, which should preferably be on your work table or nearby. Things that you will need are gloves to protect your hands from cuts, tools, replacement blades and your Fiskars rotary cutter. Note that it is important that you work in a safe and clean area or surface to make your work much easier.
- Unscrew all the plastic thumb nuts on your Fiskars rotary cutter. These are usually located on the opposite side of the tool, particularly on the bladed side. Since this can be just done by tightening one's fingers and rotating, no special tools are needed for this procedure. Once you have succeeded in removing the plastic thumbs, just pull out the orange plastic guard from the blade side of the tool. Then, remove the blade slowly and carefully. For a much easier way of removing the blade, put the blade in a retracted position. This also happens to be the safest way of doing it. After you're done in removing the old blade, it is important to dispose of it properly to avoid any accidents that may occur in the future, especially with kids.
- Replace the blade with the new one. Be very careful in doing this because new blades are very sharp. Protect your fingers by wearing gloves. Replace the blade on a flat and clean surface so that you can easily align the center hole of the blade correctly.
- Put the orange guard back. Do this by making sure that the center hole matches the new blade and that the flat side matches both the screw base and the hole side. To see if you have matched it properly, twist the guard on its axis. If it doesn't spin, it is an assurance that you have placed it properly, and that the blades are now well secured. But if does spin, repeat the procedure. Be careful since you are now dealing with the new blades. Improper handling can result in skin cuts. Extra care must be applied at all times.
- Finish up by screwing the nut back on the handle of the tool. Tightening it up too much can cause breakage, so it is important to apply just enough torque for the handle to hold. Check the instruction manual, to make sure that you did the replacement in a correct way.
Any equipment or material needs proper care and maintenance to have a longer service life. Replacing the blade on your Friskars rotary cutter will ensure it works efficiently, and that it doesn't get rusty.
