When choosing a fence, there are many options to choose from. First, consider what practical function you wish the fence to serve. Things to take into consideration are privacy needs, security and containment issues, and cosmetic or decorative desires. Here is a list of options which will help in defining the perfect fence to suit your needs.
- Vinyl fence. A Vinyl fence will resist fading and rotting. It is a great option for those of you who seek a maintenance-free fence. Several color options are available in many attractive styles. Most vinyl fences will not provide a great deal of privacy. This is perhaps the best choice if you are seeking a fence that will enhance the beauty of your home and landscape.
- Wood panel fence. This is the best choice for providing privacy. Also a great way to keep pets and children contained, and to safeguard your property from intruders. Wood fence panels are usually sold in 8' sections ranging between 4' and 6' in height. Panels are available with either pointed or dog eared pickets, and can be stained or painted to your liking. Keep in mind that periodic maintenance and refinishing may be required with wood panel fencing.
- Polymer fence. A Polymer fence is very easy to install. It provides the classic look of wrought iron without the worry of rusting. It is low maintenance. It will not give you much privacy, but will provide security.
- Post and rail fence. Provides a rustic, natural look to your landscape. Great for outlining boundaries and property lines. Available with double-rail, or triple rail, and typical heights range from 3' to 5'. This is not a practical choice for containing small pets or children, but great for larger animals and livestock.
- Chain link fence. Also known as hurricane fencing. Chain link is very economical. It is sold in rolls ranging from 25' to 100'. Most rolls are available in heights from 4' to 8'. This fence will not give you privacy. It is a great choice however if you have pets or children. Good for providing security from trespassers and stray animals. It's a good fence if price is a concern.
