When it comes to deciding how to improve your home, the question is often, "Where do I start?" That is a tough question to answer. Sure, you could use new bathroom fixtures. But, then again, the kitchen countertops are pretty scratched and faded, and there just aren't enough windows in the living room.

It can be a never-ending series of head scratches. Here are some tips on how to choose a home renovation project:

Step 1:

Assess the situation. Take inventory of what you need and what you want. It's a good idea to make a list for each room or area of the house. Even draw up a visual design. Perhaps the picture you're most pleased with will make up your mind for you. Any good remodel starts with a good plan and a visual idea of what you want. Think about where you spend most of your time. This type of thinking is why kitchen and bath remodels are so popular. Yet everyone is different. If you spend a lot of time entertaining guests in the great room...maybe that is the way to go.

Quick Tip: It is a good idea to have your home inspected. An inspector will point out areas that need improvement that you might not see. An inspector can also assess the energy quality of your home.

Step 2:

Research materials and appliances and whatever else you'll need to purchase to get the job done. You can do this online or at your local appliance or home improvement stores. Note the costs of the products you want. You should be able to at least get a general idea of how much these things will cost which, in turn, will help you to...

Step 3:

Establish a budget. Beside what you want or need, you'll have to figure out what you can pay for. Renovation projects will vary widely in price. Kitchens are among the most expensive while other projects, such as new siding or windows, can be considerably cheaper. A lot will depend on the materials you choose. It's a good thing you researched them during step two.

Step 4:

Talk to general contractors to help you put the finishing touches on your plan. Talk with them thoroughly about your project. When you interview them, have your designs and research handy. They may be able to help you choose the most feasible project and, at the same time, you'll be deciding which contractor will do the best job for the money you have.

These are not just tips for choosing the right project -- they are also good tips for planning any remodel or renovation. There are nearly always surprises involved with remodeling, but a good plan and excellent preparation will greatly reduce them.
