There is actually a right and wrong way to clean your TV. Add to that the many different kinds of TVs that are out there and you may be confused as to the best way to treat your TV to a good cleaning, even though it gathers dirt, dust, fingerprints (especially if you have kids), and even pet hair. The following steps are safe for most TVs including flat panel and LCD screens, however you should be careful and gentle while cleaning any and all TV types. If you have a new TV, checking the owner's manual for thorough cleaning instructions is always a good idea.
Step 1:

Turn the TV off and unplug it. Cleaning the TV can cause damage if there is electricity flowing to and through it. To prevent this, turn it off and then unplug it to keep it safe.

Step 2:

Wipe clean with a damp cloth. Using cleaners on your TV can cause a lot of issues. Paper towels can also scratch many TV surfaces. Because of that, you should use a damp soft cloth as your only cleaning source. Gently clean spots, fingerprints, and other things to get a cleaner clear picture without damaging the surface.

Step 3:

Dry the TV. Using another soft cloth, dry your TV. This will prevent water damage and will protect your TV screen.

Step 4:

Use anti-static spray to keep your screen cleaner longer. Gently spray a third soft cloth with anti-static spray designed for electronics and wipe down the screen of the TV as well as the rest of the TV.

Many people do this with dryer sheets (fabric softener sheets for the dryer). This is acceptable on many older TVs, but could be dangerous on your LCD screen, plasma, or other TV screens.

Step 5:

Don't forget to plug it back in. Nothing is like feeling that the TV is broken (or having someone else panic because they think it is broken) only to discover it is unplugged!

Keeping your TV clean makes for a much better viewing situation. The picture is clearer and easier to watch. This makes the whole experience more enjoyable.
