How To Clean Dishes, Pots & Pans with Baking Soda

Dishes, pots, and pans with cooked-on and baked-on food take forever and a whole lot of strength to clean. Sometimes cleaning is harder and longer to do than the actual cooking. If looking at such mess already tires you, maybe all you need is some baking soda. Not only is it a cooking and baking ingredient; it also is useful for cleaning kitchenware. Here are different ways to use this great kitchen wonder in cleaning your dishes, pots, and pans.

  • Soak the kitchenware in the sink. Put the water stopper in the sink and begin to fill the sink halfway. Remember not to overfill, so the water won’t overflow when you put the kitchenware in. Add around three teaspoons of baking soda to the water. Then, put a thick layer of baking soda over the gunk on the dish, pot, or pan. Next, submerge the kitchenware in the water. After around 15 minutes, scrub the gunk off. Notice that gunk easily comes off, leaving the kitchenware clean. Wash it with dish soap after and rinse. If, however, the gunk has hardened, you might need to soak the kitchenware for much longer.
  • Boil the kitchenware. Boiling is necessary if the stains are quite hard to remove. To do this, half-fill the pot or pan with water and pour ¼ cup of baking soda. Pour more if the stains and gunk are really bad. Then, turn the burner on. The stains and gunk will float up as the water boils. Turn the burner off and leave the pot or pan to cool down. Then, wash it as you normally would.
  • Scrub with baking soda paste. Making a paste is another way of using baking soda as a cleaning agent. Mix three tablespoons of baking soda and one teaspoon of water in a bowl. Then, apply the paste to the gunk and burned parts of the pot or pan. Scrub with a steel wool or scrub pad. As you do this, the gunk and burned particles should easily come off. Again, wash and rinse the pot or pan after.
  • Use with vinegar. Baking soda works well with vinegar in cleaning burnt pots and pans. Simply coat the pots and pans with baking soda. Then, mix vinegar and hot water in equal amounts and pour it over the baking soda. The ingredients will create a chemical reaction that eliminates the gunk and scorched particles from the pots and pans.
  • Use baking soda as dishwasher soap. If you want to use baking soda with your dishwasher, simply mix soap, baking soda, and borax. Get around two tablespoons of the dishwasher solution and load into the dishwasher.

Baking soda is effective in almost all kinds of materials—copper, silver, brass, and aluminum, among others. But if you are somewhat doubtful, try to test one part of the dish, pan, or pot. If you see no damages and if it feels safe, proceed to cleaning the entire kitchenware with baking soda. Rinse baking soda off thoroughly. Kitchenware is quite slippery when not rinsed well.
