The upkeep of your home is absolutely essential especially if you have a lot of fixtures to look after and care about their appearance. If you have a deck for parties and/or an above ground swimming pool, you are going to have to maintain that to continuously use it to host parties and get-togethers. This is also true for resorts and country clubs with similar fixtures. So, when cleaning your deck, you cannot miss your deck railings. These can be made out of wood or plastic but both need the same amount of time and effort to clean. Here is how to clean plastic deck railings:
- Hose down your deck railings. The simplest way to clean plastic deck railings? Hose them with water. Use an ordinary high-pressure garden hose to clean your deck railings every day. Aim your water gun at the spots you want to clean and adjust the pressure settings so that you do not fire a lance of water, which could actually do some damage to your deck rails. Because they are made of plastic, you do not have to worry about rust. You do not have to be thorough about it; all you have to do is make sure you wash them to prevent the buildup of dirt.
- Using Wolman Deckbrite cleaner. Mix a pouch of Wolman Deckbrite cleaner with two and a half gallons of warm water and use a sponge, rag or soft-bristled scrub brush to apply this to your plastic deck railings. Refrain from using abrasive scrubbers because they can scratch the surface of your railings. Though they were formulated for wood, they are excellent for plastic too. Focus on areas that are especially dirty or have a high concentration of mildew or mud. Be sure to get into all the nooks and crannies to thoroughly clean your plastic deck railings. When you are done, take out your hose again and start rinsing away the soapy suds.
- Using oxygen bleach. Mix oxygen bleach powder with warm water. Use this solution on your plastic deck railings. It is specially-designed to attack mildew and algae making it perfect for cleaning your railings. It is not a harmful substance and even though it is more suited for wooden fixtures, it is safe to use on plastic. You can let it sit one area before scrubbing because it really is fast-acting. You can use a sponge to spread the solution or a spray bottle to gently coat the deck rails.
- Insect infestations. Sometimes, your plastic deck railings become home to an ant or termite colony. Insects and other small animals can make a home inside the rails or underneath the floorboards, weakening the structure. If this happens, you should call pest control to properly handle the unwanted visitors immediately because you never know if the problem can escalate.
You want to keep your plastic deck railings as clean-looking as possible so give them the proper care and treatment. Cleaning your rails is nothing difficult really but nonetheless, do it sooner rather than later.
