How To Clean Soap Scum

Soap scum is the equivalent of vitriol in bathroom-speak. It’s that gross and nasty dark ring that builds-up after you take a shower. It’s the first thing that will rob you of a pleasurable bathing experience. Can you really lie down in the tub with that around you? Of course not, right? It’s time to seriously clean this up with some fairly easy steps and various cleaning aids so you will end up with a bathroom you will be proud of (and have fun in).

How to clean soap scum using the following:

Ammonia:

  • You will need the following:
    • Unused spray bottle
    • Ammonia
    • Water
    • Rubber gloves
    • Scouring pad
    • Basin
    • Clean rags
  • Open your bathroom windows wide and let lots of natural air into the bathroom. You will need the ventilation to keep yourself safe from ammonia fumes.
  • In a basin, mix a part of ammonia and approximately two parts water. You can more or less tell if you need to dilute the ammonia smell with more water until you can tolerate the smell. The idea is to have it work without smothering you while you are cleaning your bathroom. Now, pour the mixture into the unused spray bottle.
  • Wear your gloves and take the scouring pad.
  • Begin spraying the area of the bathroom that has visible soap scum. Keep a safe distance from the contents while you are spraying. You don’t want to get any of that in your eyes.
  • Loosen the soap scum with the scouring pad.
  • Wipe the bathroom down with clean rags.

Vinegar:

  • You will need:
    • White vinegar
    • Measuring cup
    • Unused spray bottle
    • Microwave
    • Clean rags
  • Measure two cups of white vinegar. Heat it up in your microwave just enough to warm it and activate the acidity of the vinegar.
  • Pour the vinegar into an unused spray bottle. Spray the warm vinegar liberally on the soap scum accumulation. Leave it there for 10 minutes to saturate the area.
  • Wipe off with clean rags.
  • Rinse off with water.
  • Wipe down once more until the area is dry.

Borax:

  • Aside from Borax, you’ll need:
    • Scouring pad
    • Hot water
    • Pail and dipper
    • Rubber gloves
  • Wear your rubber gloves.
  • Pour a generous amount of borax on the soap scum.
  • Take a damp scouring pad. Scrub the borax with it until you see that the scum has loosened completely. Leave it like that.
  • Heat water to a point where it is hot but not scalding.
  • Take the hot water to the bathroom and pour it into a pail. Exercise extreme caution when you have to walk to the bathroom with the hot water. Better heat the water up using a boiling kettle to ensure your safety.
  • Rinse the borax and soap scum off by splashing it with hot water from a dipper. Allow the bathroom area to dry naturally by opening your windows.

You can perform this task weekly so your bathroom always looks clean and sanitary.
