Although you may be an expert when it comes to painting, accidents can happen. It may not be a major spillage, maybe just a few drops here and there, but it does need to be cleaned up. There are a few measures to take to try and avoid creating a mess when painting, but if it does, the following tips can make the job of cleaning up less complicated:
- For latex paint spills:
- When latex paint is accidentally spilled on a rug or carpet, it would be much simpler to clean if it is still wet. There are several available brands of stain removers that you can use. The first thing to do would be to scrub off the paint on the affected area with a clean rag. Follow this up by cleaning it up with water. Start using your stain remover. Repeat the process several times until you are satisfied with the result. Another option would be to soak the area with dishwashing liquid and hot water. Let it stand for a while before scrubbing it off. Latex paint is water soluble and can soften in water quite easily as long as you do not take your time in cleaning it up.
- When cleaning up latex paint on hard surfaces, a good latex paint remover can usually do the job. Place paint remover on a rag and scrub the area thoroughly. For spots that are harder to remove, leave the paint remover for a short while and follow it up by scraping of paint with a blunt instrument, a plastic scraper or even your fingernail. This should do the trick.
- Latex paint on concrete can be removed using a wire brush and a water hose. Spray the concrete surface with water and use the brush to scrub and loosen paint. Repeat the process over until your concrete surface is free of the paint mess.
- Your paint brushes will need to be cleaned up too. Placing them under running water, spread the bristles apart and remove paint with a scraper. A wire brush can also be used for this purpose, if paint is a bit tougher to simply scrape off. Your fingernails are a handy tool in performing the same task.
- Acrylic paint is water based and can easily be removed with by scrubbing with water, assuming that cleaning up is done immediately. If the paint has dried up, you may need to use sandpaper to do the scraping. Another way to remove paint stains is using cotton buds dampened with acetone. Apply on the surface and wipe with a wet cloth.
- Oil paint spots are removed by dipping a rag in some mineral spirit, scrubbing the affected area and finally, rinsing it off. If paint has hardened, you can purchase an enzyme cleaner to remove paint.
Painting can be a very messy job. Always use newspapers to cover surfaces to protect them from the spills and drips. Although cleaning up is simple enough, a little effort of making sure the area you are working on is kept as safe as possible from paint messes will lessen the trouble of removing unwanted spots and stains later on.
