Fire is an unpredictable event that could be caused by anything from an accident in the kitchen to poor wiring. The best way to prepare for such an unexpected disaster is to formulate a family fire action plan. Ensure that everyone in the home knows what to do in case of fire. A basic fire safety kit is an essential part of that plan. The elements of a fire kit are simple and relatively inexpensive when compared to potential losses. It is also the first line of fire insurance. Here's how to build a fire safety kit.

  1. The first essential element of a fire safety kit is the smoke detector. A good smoke alarm is vital to early warning against fire. Along with this piece of hardware, develop a regular routine of battery replacement. Fresh batteries should be used on a regular basis and before the old battery is drained of power. A small apartment may only require one smoke alarm, but larger homes should have two at a minimum and at least one on every floor. In addition, CO2 sensors are equally valuable in the detection of hazardous gas.
  2. The fire extinguisher is the most obvious piece of fire fighting hardware. A single, two to three pound multipurpose extinguisher is typically adequate and should be kept in an easy to access place. It should also be placed in areas that are more prone to fire, for example the kitchen instead of the bedroom. Fire extinguishers come in a variety of sizes and ratings. Any general purpose fire extinguisher with an ABC rating is acceptable.
  3. Another hardware element of the fire kit for those living in multi-level homes is the fire ladder. These are simple rope ladders equipped with hooks that fit snugly over the window sill. When shopping for fire ladders keep in mind weight restrictions. Also make sure the length is adequate for your home. Other elements of the emergency kit are a flashlight, a fire blanket, and a first aid kit.
  4. The most important aspect of the fire kit is the user. Get acquainted with the equipment and practice using the elements in your kit. Maintenance is important. Regularly check fire extinguisher mechanisms and alarm batteries.
