A fresh floral centerpiece is ideal for decorating the center of a dining room table, a coffee table and it can look exceptionally impressive when displayed on a pedestal in a foyer. Fresh floral arrangements are costly, but it is not necessary to purchase a prearranged floral centerpiece. Absolutely anyone can create a beautiful floral centerpiece that appears professionally arranged, and the following tips and advice will help you get started on creating a beautiful fresh floral centerpiece worthy of a fine dining room table, a formal great room or a pedestal in a grand foyer.
Step 1:

Choose fresh flowers for a sense of balance. Growing a cutting garden is a fantastic way to enjoy the beauty of a fresh floral centerpiece as soon as the flowers are in bloom, but not all flowers are ideal for cutting, and some will not last. Read flower seed packaging or consult planter tags before choosing flowers for cutting. Whether you want the arrangement to be symmetrical or asymmetrical, it should create a sense of balance; the flowers chosen should be proportionate in scale and size and the arrangement should include a variety of textures, patterns and colors that can be unified into one gorgeous floral centerpiece. Bergamot, arum lilies, blanket flowers, coneflowers, daisies, chrysanthemums and gladioli are just some of the varieties that make beautiful arrangements that will last for days when properly cut and prepared.

Step 2:

Cut fresh flowers. It is important to cut the flowers properly and prepare them before creating a floral centerpiece. As a result, the blooms will remain healthy and fresh for a longer period of time. The arrangement will last as long as a floral centerpiece professionally designed, and it will look just as beautiful.

The ideal time to cut flowers to create a fresh floral centerpiece is early morning, and it is important to choose the blooms carefully. Select blooms that are just beginning to open so they will last for days on end. Cut the stems at an angle while allowing room for additional trimming, and immediately place the cuttings in tepid water. In addition, trim off any foliage that will remain beneath the water when the centerpiece is created. Otherwise, decaying foliage will create bacteria and the flowers will not last. Woody stems should also be stripped away to allow for better water absorption. If necessary, carefully whittle back the covering at the bases of the stems. Allow the stems to remain in the water between six and seven hours before arranging the centerpiece, and in the meantime prepare the vase that will hold the centerpiece.

Step 3:

Prepare the vase. A vase that will hold fresh flowers should be meticulously clean. Wash it in hot soapy water to kill any bacteria, and rinse away any trace of soap. Next, select and trim a block of florist foam to fit the vase snuggly. Place it in clean room temperature water for six or seven hours. After the foam has absorbed all of the water it can hold, push it into the clean vase. It should fit very snuggly along all sides. The vase is now ready for displaying an arrangement of fresh flowers.

Step 4:

Create the floral centerpiece. The way in which fresh flowers are arranged is as important as how they are cut and prepared before creating the centerpiece. Begin by trimming the stems at an angle once again, and space several well-chosen flowers first to establish the shape of the floral centerpiece. It can be rounded, triangular or even s-shaped, and the stems should be trimmed accordingly. Next, fill in the open areas with smaller, less auspicious flowers such as baby's breath, and foliage such as lacy fern leaves. Lastly, place the main flowers that will create the most drama in the center of the arrangement. The floral centerpiece should be full and well-shaped, and the florist foam should not be visible.

Once you create one fresh floral arrangement you will realize how easy it is to create a centerpiece that looks professionally designed. For far less than you ever imagined you can enjoy a fresh floral centerpiece all spring, summer and even into fall. The floral centerpieces you create will turn heads and generate many compliments. Get started by planting a cutting garden, and in the meantime purchase fresh cut flowers and create a floral centerpiece for every holiday, special occasion or anytime you want to bring the beauty of fresh flowers indoors.
