While there is no one way to decorate for Halloween, there are several themes that can be used to create a spooky atmosphere for any home.

Halloween is now the second-largest holiday in the U.S. in terms of money spent. Much of this enormous boost to the retail economy is the purchase of thousands of different types of decorations for Halloween. While there is no one perfect way to decorate for Halloween, there are several types of Halloween decoration themes that can be used to create a spooky Halloween atmosphere for any home.

Step 1:

Choose outdoor decorations for Halloween that will weather well in your climate. Many people enjoy hanging ghost decorations from the trees in their yards and a ghost or bat decoration from their front porch or stoop. If you live in a rainy area, be sure that your outdoor ghosts and bats are made from a sturdy cloth. Using a thick white satin material for homemade ghosts will result in Halloween decorations that will give the home a fun Halloween atmosphere for weeks.

Step 2:

To add to outdoor decorations for Halloween, wind some orange lights around your front railings, the front door or in the bushes in front of the house. Outdoor orange string lights are inexpensive and are made to hold up in inclement weather.

Step 3:

Add a variety of fun decorations for Halloween indoors. Hobby stores and mass market stores carry a wide range of small Halloween decorations that will fit in any small space in the home. A few candles with a Halloween theme that are placed in black or silver candle holders are a perfect understated Halloween decoration. Other small indoor Halloween decorations are stuffed or plastic spiders that can be placed in unexpected places. Dripping blood stick-ons can be placed in windows or on mirrors.

Step 4:

Larger outdoor Halloween decorations include full-size figures that are placed outside the front door  and blow-up Halloween figures that are placed in the front yard. Large blow-up ghosts, monsters and spiders are now very inexpensive and are quite easy to set up.

On Halloween night, a fog machine that produces low-lying fog sets the perfect Halloween mood. Be sure to place the fog machine so that it spreads fog across the lawn rather than on a front porch where it can obscure the front stairs.

Step 5:

Halloween ribbons are available in hobby stores and fabric stores, and they can be added to just about anything to give it the home a festive Halloween touch. They can be wrapped around outdoor columns, tied around candlesticks, wrapped around dinner napkins or used as tiny table runners to dress up any table.

Step 6:

Add synthetic spiderwebs to any intimate objects for an instant Halloween decoration. Spiderwebs are sold in small bags of intertwined webbing that can be pulled apart and added to anything from tree branches to picture frames.
