How To Fix Scratches and Marks in a Granite Countertop

Granite is an igneous rock which is formed from magma. This has different colors which depend on its chemistry and mineralogy. This is used in buildings and on rock climbing sport. This is also used as material for countertops at home.

Granite is a very hard material which does not easily break. However, after a long service life, granite can also be prone to scratches and marks. If you use this as your kitchen countertop, the things that you slide on top of it will produce scratches and marks which affects the appearance of your countertop. This is very common especially when preparing something on the kitchen.

Granite countertops are a lot more expensive than regular countertops so you need to take care to avoid having to replace your countertops with a new one. Instead of sliding the materials on your countertop, make sure to lift these to avoid scratching your countertop or leaving marks. But sometimes, even though how much you try to take care of your counter top, it’s still possible that it will be scratched and will have marks in the long run.

To remove scratches and marks on your granite countertop, here are a few things you can do.

  • Remove marks with soap and water. Put water on a small container. Get a pack of powdered soap and pour some on the water to dissolve. Get a rug and use your mixture of water and soap to wipe the marks with pressure.
  • Use steel wool for hard to remove marks. If there are marks that can’t be removed by soap and water, try using an ultra fine steel wool. Make sure to put light pressure when rubbing this on the marks. You can also use a stone cleaner for removing these marks.   • Use diamond sanding blocks. If scratches or marks were not removed with steel wool and stone, you need to use something which is harder than granite. You can use diamond sanding blocks to remove these. Use these on the side of the scratch first then go over the scratch. Remove debris once done by rinsing the surface. Rubbing compound should be use before applying stone sealer. Even if there are no scratches, you need to apply stone sealer at least once a year so that your countertop will be protected.   • Hire a professional. If you are still unable to remove the marks after doing all the steps provided, it’s best to call a professional who will take care of your problem. It’s better to pay someone who’s trained to do the job instead of trying further and causing more damage in the end. This will cost you even more, so call a professional to take care of the scratches on your countertop.
