Homeowners need to ensure that the water supply in their home is the best quality and is safe for drinking. The water source for tap water when brought for testing or analysis, should report that the water meets quality standards. In some cases, problems with water quality involve proper water management. Here are some water quality problems and how to fix them.
- Bacterial contamination can cause diarrhea, nausea, dysentery or hepatitis. The source of the water contamination must first be identified. Seek the help of a water quality expert to conduct testing and analysis of your water supply to give you options on how to fix your water problem. In most cases bacteria can easily be treated through chlorination. Water purification ultraviolet lamps or UV lights with sensitivity monitors are also sometimes used to kill the bacteria.
- Using hard water is one of the most common quality problems. Hard water causes white build up in water fixtures, shower heads, faucets, kitchen utensils and equipment. It also produces soap scum on sinks, showers or bathtubs. Hard water does not easily make soap lather and causes problems when using a washing machine. To restore water quality, use a water softener to add sodium to the water and reduce and remove the calcium and magnesium causing the problem. It also helps prevent damage to your plumbing system. Other options to treat the problem can be to separate the plumbing installation of the house or to treat only the water supply you need better quality for like the hot water supply.
- Stains sometimes appear around the drains and the metal pipes show signs of corrosion. This means that your water supply has a low Ph level and is highly acidic. Have a professional plumber check the extent of corrosion in your pipes. If the problem is treatable, install a neutralizing particle filter and add a continuous feeder with alkaline solution as needed.
- There is rust in the water when the water is reddish and rust stains appear around the sink drains, bathtubs, in the toilet and in clothing. Using a water softener solves rust in the water. Attach a chlorination feeder, an oxidizing filter and an activated carbon filter to soften the water. In some cases, salts are added to the water softener.
- A brownish or yellowish color of the water with an odd taste may mean your water contains organic materials or algae. Install a particle filter and if the problem is worse, add chlorine to the water using a continuous feeder together with an activated carbon filter.
- Rotten egg smelling water means the water contains hydrogen sulfide. It makes the water black and tarnishes silverware. The hydrogen sulfide also causes metal pipes to corrode and can damage appliances. Ask a qualified plumber to check if your pipes are corroded. If the problem can be fixed, install an oxidizing filter, or install an additional activated carbon filter, particle filter, and chlorination feeder system.
- Using water coming from a well may be dirty or cloudy if the water source contains mud, silt, dirt and sand. Installing a particle filter can easily improve the water quality. If the water has a certain odor, an activated carbon filter needs to be added. Well water should be tested at the least once a year.
