A halogen lamp, also called a quartz lamp, is a special type of incandescent lamp. One of its advantages over a normal incandescent lamp is its ability to maintain a constant level of light output throughout its life. The lifespan of a halogen lamp is about three to four times that of the life of a normal incandescent lamp.

Below are the steps to install a halogen porch light:

  1. Lay out the new electrical/utility box. Before doing this, make sure that you turn off the entire circuit. Test the circuit using a volt meter or a test light. The circuit is dead or off when no voltage registers in the volt meter or the test light does not function. Unscrew the wall plate, disconnect the wires from the receptacles, and detach it from the electrical box.
  2. Remove the old electrical box. Once you’re done enlarging the hole that will accommodate the new electrical box, you may remove the old one. Loosen the wires coming into the electrical box then use a flat pry bar to remove the old one.
  3. Install a new length of electrical wires or cable. Cut the required length of nonmetallic electrical cable so that it's long enough to reach from the electrical box to the halogen lamp, plus the required allowance on both ends for the connection.
  4. Install the halogen porch light fixture. Remove the bulb first, if it is already there, to avoid breakage while installing it to the wall. Screw it to the wall. A stud bolt would be more secure since the entire fixture is heavy enough that an ordinary screw can't handle the weight.
  5. Install the new electrical box.  Hold the new box close to the hole and feed the end of the existing cable. Connect the wiring between the existing cable and the new cable to the halogen light fixture. Push the box into the hole and press it tightly.
  6. Install the switch. Make the necessary wiring connection for the switch of your halogen porch light.
  7. Finalize the fixture and wall plate. Reinstall the socket strip if there is any in the halogen lamp fixture. Don’t put the bulb in place yet until you make the necessary wiring connection in the fixture. Once wiring is complete, install the bulb and return its cover. Secure the plate of your electrical box. Turn on the power of your circuit and test your work.

When testing the functionality of your circuit and the newly installed halogen porch light, don’t touch the halogen bulb with your bare hands. Your hands have natural oils which can overheat and damage the bulb. If the light does not work, recheck your wiring connection with the electrical diagram as there might be a misconnection.

Adequate and proper lighting in our households don't just add aesthetic value to our homes but makes them safer places to work and stay. Porch lights are required because they will illuminate everyone entering the household. Installing a halogen porch light is a simple project if you are familiar with electrical lighting circuits.
