It's nice to have a look at the morning sky, especially on a sunny day, but once the sun starts to find its way up above the sky, its scorching heat can surely be nerve-wracking. It is for this reason why decorative window films have been created. They serve not only as protection from the heat that can build up inside a room but also to add privacy, security and a touch of style. It is a good accessory to decorate a rather boring window. This accessory can be a frosted film, glass film or solar film. You can have it installed as a privacy film over a stained glass or any type of windows.
In general, there are two types of decorative films for windows in the market—adhesive polyester films and adhesive-free static vinyl films. Both types involve the same installation process and removal tools, although this may depend on the user, especially if he wants it to be personalized or custom-made.
Installation tools needed
- A pair of scissors
- Ruler or measuring tape
- Spray bottle
- Plastic card squeegee
- Paper towels, magazine or any solution removal piece
Installation steps to be followed:
- Prepare the tools and materials needed for installing the decorative window film. See to it that the area where you will be working is free from any mess or clutter, as it can cause confusion when you start the task. Clean the area where the decorative film is to be installed be it a film, frosted film, glass film or solar film. Do it in such a way that it is free from any unwanted particles or substances.
- Get a ruler or any other measuring devices. Measure the required width and height of the surface where the decorative film is to be installed. There must be an extra ¾ inch on each side of the film to allow possible adjustments. Cut the film according to the measurement required.
- Create the needed wetting solution by mixing 8 drops of mild detergent in 32 oz water. Fill the spray bottle with this solution.
- See to it that the decorative film is placed on a clean and flat surface. Take note that the release liner is positioned on the top. After removing the release liner, spray the detergent and water solution on the adhesive surface. The film must be soaked carefully.
- Thoroughly spray a generous amount of the solution on the glass surface. Next, wet the film by spraying a little solution. Get the plastic card squeegee and move it from the center and outwards and right into the edges to wipe off the excess wetting solution. See to it that the bubbles formed due to the detergent are thoroughly removed as well.
- Once the bubbles are removed, use the pair of scissors to trim the excess film on the edge. If there is a need to make an adjustment, do so carefully. However, for a more polished cut, a razor knife and ruler can instead be used.
- Now, you have the new decorative window film installed in place. In case there is excess solution on the window surface, wipe it using paper towels or any piece of clean paper. The solution may accumulate on the edge. Be sure to wipe it clean and clear to avoid a messed up window look.
Steps and tools in installing decorative window films may vary depending on the type of film. Either way, see to it that you have extra pieces of paper to wipe the excess solution.
