How To Keep Bugs Out of your House without Using Pesticides

One of the things homeowners worry about when it comes to their surroundings at home is how to keep it safe and free from all kinds of bugs. Some people even have certain phobias of specific bugs that can make them very uncomfortable, harmless as some of these bugs may be. All types of methods are employed to ensure that these creepy crawlies stay out and keep out of the home. The most often means used to keep bugs away are pesticides. However, most of them do contain harmful chemicals that are not only dangerous for bugs but can also be dangerous for you as well. Fortunately, there are methods you can use to achieve the same purpose, without having to use harmful pesticides. Here’s how you can do it:

  • The first and most basic thing to remember is to always keep your surroundings clean. A house that is neat and spotless is never a welcome sight for bugs that enjoy dirt and mess. Keep leftover food where they are supposed to be, in sealed containers and inside the fridge or wrapped properly and thrown into your garbage. Make sure that bits of food and crumbs that may have fallen on the floor or scattered on the table are carefully cleaned up. Packages of food that have already been opened must be sealed up or placed inside containers that have air tight lids. These are great attractions not only for bugs but mice as well and you end up trying to get rid of two types of pests instead of one.
  • Check out the surroundings of your home and see if there are any holes that may need patching up, or gaps where these creatures could be gaining access to get inside. Since they are so tiny, they can fit into any opening, no matter how small.
  • Don’t forget to look inside cabinets located under your bathroom or kitchen sinks. Because they are dark and often musty, bugs love to reside there. The question is how do they get there in the first place? Examine your pipes and look around their surrounding areas. There may be parts that are exposed and will need to be covered up which will make it extremely difficult for bugs to get in.
  • A cheap and effective solution is sprinkling boric acid (borax) along the edges of your walls, inside your closets, and within the gaps and cracks you may find in certain areas of your home. This is not harmful for you or your family. Just make sure to sweep up and mop after sprinkling. By mopping, the boric acid is able to seep into the little fissures of floors and will deter bugs from trying to settle in.

Some bugs may be harmless but there are those that can bring diseases into a household. Make sure you are able to resolve your bug problem immediately. Keeping your house bug-free will save you from a lot of problems later on. With a little bit of work, you should be able to get rid of these pests for good.
