Even with all of life’s time constraints and stresses, keeping your home neat and tidy need not be a burden or time consuming. With a little bit of planning and daily maintenance, your home can be tidy, organized, and a place of relaxation.
To start, keeping a list of daily, weekly, and monthly home chores will allow you to stay on top of activities related to your home’s maintenance. Going through these lists periodically will ensure that regular chores and maintenance gets done and does not begin to pile up.
Next, one of the best ways to keep your home neat and tidy is to have a proper place, or home, for all of your things. By having a proper storage place for everything in your home it will be less cluttered and easier to clean. Start a habit of having proper homes for everything you own and returning objects to their ‘home’ after use.
Thirdly, a simple way to keep your home from accumulating too much clutter is to enlist the in-and-out rule. For everything that comes into your home, something else must go out. If you buy a new living room couch, get rid of the old one or donate it to a local charity. If you have room somewhere else in your home for the old couch then try to find something else that can be moved out. The objects coming in and going out need not be the same type or size. The important thing is to simply ensure that clutter does not take hold and build up.
In addition, a good plan of action for keeping up your home’s tidy appearance is to complete household chores in a timely manner. For example, after doing the laundry do not just pile the clothes somewhere and plan to tackle them later. Putting them away right after they get done will save you time and help to keep clutter from piling up. Do the same with dirty dishes and other similar chores. When bringing in the mail, go through it right then and there. Discard junk mail on the spot and put bills in an appropriate place.
Finally, at least twice a year go through and evaluate your personal possessions. Are there any clothes you do not wear simply because they do not fit or you do not like how they look on you? Consider donating them to a local charity or tossing out the ones that are too far gone. Do this also with your other possessions. Are there things that are broken and cannot be repaired or things that you just do not use anymore? Donate the usable items and toss the rest. Doing this and the other steps on a regular basis will help to keep your home tidy and uncluttered.
