Do you have space in an area of your house and find yourself thinking, “A built-in desk would go great in there!” But then, you also find yourself contemplating on how to start building one. Of course, hiring a professional to build one for you may be the easy way out, but it can cost you an arm and a leg. If you have basic building skills, all you need to do is have some knowledge on how to build one on your own. Here is a step-by-step procedure on how to build a built-in desk.
- Materials. Before you begin building the desk, you will need the following items on hand: a table saw, a screwdriver, some plywood (3/4), a couple of 2x4s, a power drill, a level, drill bits, wood screws, a measuring tape and a pencil or marker.
- Measurements. The first thing you need to do is measure the wall. The angle, width, depth and height are all factors before you begin cutting the wood. Make the necessary marks on the wall and the exact measurements. You may now proceed to sawing the plywood to fit the space. Ensure that when you saw the plywood, reduce it a little portion at a time. You would want to avoid cutting off a big chunk and wasting the entire wood.
- Procedure. To start with, locate the hash marks you have made and attach a piece of 2x4 on the area, using the level to ensure that it is not crooked or misaligned. Using a stud finder, locate the studs and place a mark on the 2x4 on each of the studs. Drill a hole in the centre of the wood where the studs are located, proceeding to lining it on the wall and secure it on the wall studs with the screws. Do this for the other side on the top as well as the sides on the floor. This will act as the support or pillars for the shelves. Next, attach one of the sawed plywood on the bottom of the 2x4 support/placeholder. Be sure that it is snugly fit to the wall as much as possible. When you are confident on the placement of the wood, you can now nail it to the 2x4s by using the nails that you have. Do this for the top portion of the shelf as well until you finish the task.
In addition, you can also add drawers for your built-in desk. It would be a wise idea to purchase a premade drawer to make things easier for you. All you have to do is match the color and design of the drawers you will buy to the finish of the wood that you are using. These premade drawers already have allotted holes that can be easily nailed to the bottom of your desk. Just make sure that you align it properly using a level and a ruler. With that, you can now make your own built-in drawer by doing it yourself. Good luck!
