A cottage can be a great getaway for those who are trying to escape the hustle and bustle of the urban lifestyle. Nothing captures the idea of easy living in the countryside or the mountain regions like a picture of a cottage in the middle of a vast plain or valley. While most people would be more than happy with villa rental or having a house out in the country, some people would definitely want to go the extra mile make a cottage themselves. It may be quite a financial stretch considering that you would only go there during holidays, but if you’ve got money to burn, why not spend it on something that could be of great value to your family and friends in terms of being able to build great memories?

A cottage is a house that has a very simple exterior. It’s often only one level and has a front porch that allows it to double as an outdoor living room and as venue for small get-togethers with family and neighbors. It usually has a strong Americana feel to it. It’s a perfect holiday home especially if it has a great majestic natural backdrop.

To make a cottage look very natural in its environment, it would be good if the materials used in the house would be the indigenous types of building materials that compliment the area. Look at how the locals live and try to pattern your house after theirs. You would never want your house to stick out like a sore thumb in a relatively low key environment. While these places could be the home of the rich and famous, no one really wants to overpower the scenic beauty of any rural or holiday locality.

The colors should also be consistent. The general feel of the place should reflect in the color palette that you choose. The color of the leaves, rocks and other natural elements in the area should be evident in your design and architecture. While a full on camouflage is not the idea, it would be great to see a house that blends into the surroundings instead of having one that blatantly betrays the general feel of the area.

This can easily be done if you commission a contractor that is accustomed to making projects along these lines. A local contractor would be more than familiar with the various construction styles and architecture that is used in the area. You may also ask for specific details to allow for your various requirements and ideas for the design.

Creating a classic cottage does not just involve the looks. You should also consider traditional ways of building the cottage from ground up, including the foundation, and how to source for materials. While this may not be as strong and sturdy as what modern architecture would be, part of the fun in building a classic cottage would be the effort you put into it. If you make it into a labor of love, then you will enjoy it no matter the cost.
