A trash can is simply a trash can, until you look at it from a different angle. A trash can might be turned into several different things, but right now, let's start by turning one into a compost bin, netting you one lovely garden this next season.
Turning a trash can into a composter can be done in more than one way, so let's start with the simplest way. Now, if you have an old rusty trash can, that has a bad bottom on it, that is fine, and it will do to get started with, simply paint the outside of the trash can, to make it look a little more presentable. You could even color it to match the green in your yard and garden, if it is going to be seen.
- If your trash can is basically new, then take the lid off, and set it to the side.
- Turn the trash can upside down.
- Put a few holes in the bottom. Only a few, about the size of a penny or smaller, will work just fine.
- Turn it back up, into it's rightful position.
- Find yourself some rocks, about three or four will do, and pretty much the same size in thickness. Place those rocks in the area that you are going to want your compost bin at.
- Now, take the trash can to the same place, and set it on top of the rocks.
- Top it off with the lid.
- When you have vegetable peelings, vegetables, fruit and fruit peelings, simply take them out to your new compost bin, and dump them in. Add grass clippings, and things of that nature.
- Every now and then, about once or twice a month, add just a little water.
- Add some dirt, just a little, about once a month.
- Also, about one time a month, you will need to put the lid on the trash can, very securely. Now tum it over, and give it a roll. Don't worry, it's not going to hurt it, and you will have your compost stirred up without any labor on your part.
Never add raw meats, cooked meats, vegetable oils, grease, or any cooked foods at all to your compost bin. Keep it clean with fresh vegetables, fruits, organic materials, grass clippings, coffee grounds from your coffee pot, egg shells, etc.
By keeping your compost bin properly and adding only the things that are natural and organic, you won't have smell, and will not have rodents, insects, and other undesirable things around your compost bin. Remember, never put cooked foods into your bin.
