Caulk is often used to make joints airtight. These products are used for a variety of purposes, ranging from caulking the tiles, sinks, or even joints in between windows. The caulk usually comes in various colors, so that it will blend well with the colors of the surrounding area where you will apply the caulk. Sometimes, however, you may find yourself in a situation where you are trying to apply caulk in between an item that doesn’t match any other caulk colors. In this case, you should mix your own caulk with the color that you like. Here’s how.
- Find the color. First of all, you need to determine the colors that you need to match the caulk with the surface that you are trying to cover with the caulk. Try to get a patch of the color and bring it with you when you visit the hardware shop while shopping for the paints to use with the caulk. If this is not possible, try getting a photograph of the color that you want. Keep in mind, however, that colors usually change in hue when you photograph them. Make sure that you use a photo that matches the color as clearly as possible. You can usually use latex or acrylic paint for the job, and these are readily available in most hardware shops.
- Mix. Afterwards, place some caulk powder in a large paper plate and then begin to add in some of the paint. Make sure that you start with as little paint as possible first. Remember, after adding the paint into the caulk mixture, you will not be able to lighten the caulk. It is best if you start with little paint, and add in more paint if you think that the caulk is not yet dark enough to match the color on the surrounding area. If you happen to make a mistake and if you make a color that is too dark, the only solution is to add more caulk. This means, however that you will not be able to use the caulk for any other surface color.
- Lock. After you have finished creating the colors for the caulk, the next step is for you to place the caulk in a plastic bag. The best bags are Ziploc bags, because these lock in on themselves easily, and you can easily unlock the bag to add in more paint and caulk, if necessary. Take a scissor and use it to create a small hole on the edge of the Ziploc bag. Afterwards, use the Ziploc bag to apply the caulk wherever it is needed.
Keep in mind, however, that caulk naturally changes color as it dries up
and hardens. Usually, the color becomes much lighter after it has fully
dried up. This means that you should make sure that the color is a bit
darker than the color that you are trying to imitate, so that when the
caulk dries up, you will end up with a color that is exactly the same as
the color that you are going for. With these steps, you should end up
with perfectly colored caulk.
