Making a duct tape shower curtain can be a lot of fun as well as save the environment. Duct tape now comes in colors other than silver so if it does not suit you, there are many other options available. Perhaps you could pick coordinating colors that match your bathroom. Silver matches well with the modern industrial style and is sure to make anyone happy, especially teenagers and the college age.
A couple things you will need to get your project started are 4 to 5 rolls of duct tape, scissors, ruler or tape measure, masking tape, and a large size hole punch.
First, you will want to cut your duct tape. A standard shower curtain is 71 inches by 71 inches. Standard duct tape is 2 inches wide. Cut your strips into 71 inch long pieces. You will want to cut your strips first as it will make the project much easier. You will need about 75 strips of duct tape.
Next, move to a large surface area such as a tile floor. Lay 36 strips horizontally. It works best if you line them up touching each other vertically. Tape them down to the floor with the masking tape so they do not bunch up and move around while you are working. Do not tape the ends more than one inch in. If you do, you will be taping the actual part that is going to show on your shower curtain.
Moving on, take the remaining strips and start weaving them in and out of the original 36 strips, like a basket. It is easiest to start at the bottom left or right corner depending on which hand you work with. After each piece that has been weaved in, tape it down with masking tape.
Note: when weaving, remember each piece is opposite. If you start on top with the first piece and then go under, on the next piece you need to start under and go over.
Continue weaving until you have used all your pieces of duct tape. Once you have finished, carefully remove the pieces of masking tape.
The next to the last step is to simply line the edges of your duct tape shower curtain with pieces of duct tape so that it does not come unraveled. Cut strips of duct tape that are as long and as wide as the shower curtain you just made. Use these to go around the edges to provide reinforcement. Place the strip so that the curtain is in the middle of the strip, and fold over to the other side. You might want to try another color for accent if all one color is too much. Another idea is to use more than one color when weaving.
The final step is to make your holes for the curtain rings. Using a special hole punch for scrapbooking can ensure your hole is large enough for the ring to go through and hang your curtain on the rod. The amount and placement of the holes are up to the maker, and will be determined by how many rings you want.
