Curtains are a great way to change the look and feel of your home. Apart from providing aesthetic beauty, these curtains are also a great way for you to keep the insides of your home protected from peering eyes, and to keep excess sunlight away during the day. But since actual curtains can be expensive, one of the alternatives that you can try out are shower curtains. Shower curtains come in a variety of fabrics, shapes, and designs, and can work as well for a normal window as they will for the bathroom. Here’s how.
- Measure. The first step is to find the exact measurements of the window. Take the length and the width of the window. Afterwards, you will need to determine how much excess width and length the curtain should have. Usually, one to three inches off excess length on all sides will be enough to ensure that the curtain will fully cover the window, but you can also choose to get curtains that go all the way to the floor.
- Shop for designs. Once you have the measurements ready, you can start searching for the shower curtain design of your choice. The key to making your shower curtain look ready for the living room or your bedroom is to choose good fabrics. There are plenty of cheap shower curtains made from very thin sheets of plastic, but these will definitely look out of place in the living room or near your bed. Instead, use shower curtains that are made from actual fabrics. When looking for the designs, make sure that the color, print, and pattern will all match the existing wallpaper, paint, or furniture in the room where you will place the curtains. If the curtains are too small, it is also a good idea for you to get two pairs of curtains.
- Cutting the curtains. Once the curtains have been purchased, the next step is to modify the shower curtains. Use a tailor’s chalk and a meter stick to draw the dimensions of the curtain that will be made from the shower curtains, and use shears to cut it. Fold in half an inch on the three sides, and sew the edges. The top should be folded inside up to two and a half inches, which will give enough space for the curtain rod to go through.
- Hanging. Once the shower curtains have been prepared, the final step is for you to insert the curtain rod into the slip on the top of the curtains. If the curtain holder in your window is a grommet or button hole, you can also create small ribbons that are twelve inches in length. Make strip for every buttonhole, and use the strips to tie the curtain into place. You can also create larger strips to tie the curtain when you want to open the window up and let air and light in.
With a little innovation, you can easily refresh every room in your house with curtains – without having to make curtains from scratch and using expensive fabrics.
