How To Make Your Own Mole Traps

Getting rid of moles or gophers may not be as easy as going to the dermatologist for wart removal. Moles or gophers are the pesky creatures that make a huge mess in your garden. There are a lot of things that you can do in order to get rid of these critters. Some of them include using poison, but poisons can have harmful chemicals that may also leave your plants, grass and flowers in danger. One of the best alternatives is to make your own mole traps to get rid of the moles that are taking control of your garden.
Here are the steps on how you can create your own mole traps to get of the moles that are ruining your garden:

  1. Survey your garden. The first thing that you should do is to survey your garden and look for holes that indicate the presence of moles. These are called the active holes. Also look for bumps in your garden which is created by the burrowing activity of moles under the soil. To check whether the bumps are cause by moles, push back the soil in place and leave it for several hours. After about six to eight hours, go back to your garden and see if the bump that you have fixed has been raised up again. If you can see a bump again, this means that the hole is active.
  2. Materials. Gather all the materials that you are going to need for the mole trap. The materials include a big jar that is empty, water, strong thread and bait. One type of bait that you can use is a stick of gum.
  3. Preparing the trap. Get the jar and fill it with 12 centimeters of water. Get a thread and poke it through the stick of gum. Tie the thread to the sides of the jar or use sticky tape to do it. Use your garden gloves and carefully make the hole bigger on the active tunnel. Dig until the hole can accommodate the size of the jar that you have. Be careful in digging so that you will not disturb the moles. Rub the container with dirt to mask out your skin scent. Put the jar in the hole and cover the hole with dirt.
  4. How it works. With your trap ready, all you have to do is to wait for the mole to go for the bait. When the mole tries to get the gum, it will fall into the jar that you prepared. The mole will then drown because of the water inside the jar. If you do not want to add water and keep the mole alive, you can also do so. Check the trap every once in a while to see if the mole has already been caught.

These are the steps on how you can make your very own mole trap. Another thing you can do is to purchase a mole repellent to prevent them from spreading in your garden like skin cancer. A good mole repellent brand is Mole-Med which you can buy from gardening and landscaping stores.
