Planting a tree can be one of the most rewarding things you can do. Whether it is for your front yard, or you are trying to help the environment it can be a very satisfying, but you must make sure it is done properly. If planted correctly the tree will live a long, and healthy life, if not it could cause more trouble than pleasure.

  1. Dig the hole. This is one of the most important steps. If the hole is not big enough it could hurt the tree. You want to make sure that the hole is as deep as the trees rootball, and twice as wide. This will make sure that the roots have enough loose soil to grow into when it is young.
  2. Find a good fertilizer mix. You want to make sure that the new tree will have a good mixture of existing dirt and some sort of soil conditioner like peat moss or cow manure, both would be great. This mixture will be used to cover up the rootball in the hole. You will want to spread a thin layer of this at the bottom of the hole before putting the tree in.
  3. Remove tree from container. If your tree is in a container, you will need to remove it. Once out of the container you will want to break up the rootball as best you can. The more you can loosen up the roots the better it will be for the tree. If your tree is in a burlap sack, you want to make sure there is no metal wiring around the burlap. If there is, remove it. Place the rootball in the hole, and gently cut away the burlap. You can leave the burlap in the hole; it will naturally deteriorate.
  4. Even out the roots. Make sure the top of the rootball is even with ground level. If it is, you can begin filling in around the rootball with your soil mixture. As you begin to fill up the hole make sure to pat it down with your hand or foot. You want to make sure there are no big air pockets in the dirt, but you also do not want to pack it too tight.
  5. Clear dirt. Create a rim around the outside of where the hole was. This will help to hold in water in.
  6. Water. Give your newly planted tree a good soaking. This will help the tree settle into its new home. Also add a layer of mulch around the base to keep moisture from escaping.

Following these steps will give your newly planted tree a great start in its new environment. You can find a variety of trees at your local nursery, or home improvement centers like Home Depot and Lowe's. You can also find knowledgeable experts at these places to help you find the right tree for your situation and environment.
