How To Plant Pumpkin Seeds

Planting a pumpkin is an easy job. If you have children, it is advantageous to grow pumpkins in your garden so that you can harvest them by the time Halloween comes. You can also use the pumpkin for different recipes, such as pumpkin pies, pumpkin soup and more. All you need to plant pumpkin seeds is to purchase seeds and prepare your garden.

Here are the steps on how to plant pumpkin seeds:

1. Prepare Your Garden. Prepare your garden before planting the seeds. You can prepare the soil by adding compost and manure to have more nutrients for the seeds that you are going to plant. Choose a spot in the garden that is reached by direct sunlight. Pumpkins need a lot of sunlight in order for them to grow. Get the seeds that you will plant and put them in a container with water. Leave it overnight. By doing this, you will soften the casing of the seed and it will sprout quicker.
2. Start Planting. Make a plan on where you will place the seeds. Pumpkins need space in order for them to develop fully. Leave about 10 feet of space between the seeds. Dig holes on the ground where you will place the seeds. Create space to allow the water to seep in to the seeds. Place about 5 to 7 seeds on each hole that you dug. Separate the seeds from each other when doing this. Cover the seeds with some soil and water it.
3. Maintain Your Seeds. After a few weeks, your pumpkin seeds may already start to sprout. Remember to cut of some parts of the pumpkin if it is getting in the way. This will give the other developing roots the nutrients that they need to grow fully. Water the pumpkins daily and keep the soil moist. Pruning the plant will help it develop further. You can also do pruning to guide the vines of the pumpkin in the direction that you want it to go.
4. Pick the Pumpkins. As the season gets colder, you may notice that the vines of the pumpkin will start to change in color and shrivel up. You will know if your pumpkins are ready to be picked when they have a rich bright orange color. You can use the pumpkins for Halloween or for cooking.
5. Cover them During the Cool Season. During the cool seasons, you may find that the pumpkin and the vines dry up and shrivel. You can cover the vines with a plastic sheet during the nighttime to prevent the plants from frosting. Remove the covers during the daytime so that they can receive the sunlight that they need.
