In times of crisis, the best weapon any of us has is being prepared. Times are changing and with that change comes changes in the weather. Storms in summer and winter are becoming more and more frequent, and so it is best to be prepared for a storm the whole year round. A tornado can come when you least expect it and a hurricane or cyclone is almost as impossible to detect, because nowadays climate changes have made weather more unpredictable due to global warming. It is still important, however, to still keep abreast with warnings on the news about changes in the wind and weather changes in other countries.

We all know the basic things needed like food and flashlights, but we need so much more. Here are some tips on how to effectively prepare for a storm:

  1. Buy in bulk. Non-perishable food items should be purchased, of course, and batteries for more than one flashlight. Create a first aid emergency kit complete with cash, a portable radio, matches and candles. Always keep emergency lights charged and ready for any emergency.
  2. Clear storm drains. Make sure to unclog storm drains and to clean up any trash that might have accidentally been dumped there. You won’t be the only one who benefits from this, but your entire neighborhood as well. This is important to help avoid floods when the rains come, so even if the surge of water is sudden and abrupt, your drains can keep up with it.
  3. Plan to protect your home. Keep on hand waterproofing and other materials to prevent damage to your home. Tape glass windows during storms to prevent breakage and to avoid further damage to your home.
  4. Prepare for a quick getaway. Make sure that you prepare personal belongings in case you need to evacuate. Prepare important documents and identification. Be sure that your car has a full tank of gas as well.
  5. Map out an escape route. Map out a safe route from your home, workplace or school or in case you need to get to higher ground. This will also help if a storm comes when one or more of your family members are still at work or in school. A map will provide safety and will enable you to get to them quickly.

We must hope for the best but prepare for the worst. The best weapon we have against such natural calamities is preparedness, quick thinking and immediate action. In the event of any impending disaster, do not panic. If you have a plan, stick to it. We most importantly must do our part to help our community. Every little bit helps, and if we all do what we can, no matter how small it may seem, we can make a big difference.
