The dining room chairs are among the most important pieces in your dining room, and apart from the dining room table they are usually the first furniture in the dining room to be spotted. If you want to update the look of your dining room, the furniture that you should focus on changing is the dining room table and the dining room chair. Here’s how you can re-finish the dining room chairs.
Sanding. Begin by removing the leftover paint in the chairs. Use a paper sand to do this. Medium grade paper sand will usually be fine in removing the large chunks of paint. Use finer grade paper if you are working with chairs made from sensitive wood materials. If you have a large number of dining room chairs, it is best to use a rotary sander that will allow you to quickly sand all of the chairs. Focus on sanding the curving parts of the chair, as well as the corners that are usually difficult to reach. Sanding blocks can be used to get into the more complex parts of the dining room chairs.
Wipe. Once you have finished sanding the dining room chairs, use a soft and slightly damp cloth to wipe down the entire body of the chair. Doing this will allow you to remove all traces of wood and paint that have been removed by the sanding from the chair.
Primer. Once the chair has been cleaned, you will need to apply an initial layer of primer. The primer will allow paint or stains to be easily absorbed into the wood. There are plenty of primers to choose from. Make sure that you choose one that is designed for wood, since there are also primers that are used for fabrics and for metals. After applying the primer, give the chair enough time to dry out completely.
Paint or stains. Next, you will need to decide on whether you want to paint your chair or simply apply stains. There are pros and cons to each. When using paint, you get access to a wider range of colors that you can easily use to match the dining room chairs with the rest of the furniture in the dining room. However, stains create a more elegant look for the chairs, especially since stains are designed to bring out the natural color and lines in a wood piece.
Stencil. After painting or staining the wood, you can use stencils to add more designs on the dining room chairs. There are stencil designs that can be purchased in most hardware shops or arts and crafts shops. But, you can also make your own stencil designs and cut them out from cardboard paper.
Cushions. Finally, change the upholstery or add cushions to your chairs. Cushions come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and will not only dramatically change how your dining room chairs look, but will also make the chairs more comfortable.
With these steps, you can easily re-finish your dining room chairs and bring the dining chairs to suit your taste to update the décor in your dining room.
