You arrive at the party wearing your best and most comfortable white dress. Before you know it, someone hands you a glass of your favorite red wine. You start to mingle and find it getting harder and harder to get through the crowd. Suddenly, someone jostles you and the red wine ends up down the front of your dress and onto the host's carpet. Don't panic; all is not lost; there are ways to remove a wine stain.
As much as possible, I like to use natural cleaners. There seems to be no difference when it comes to removing wine stains. While there are commercial products that are made especially for removing wine stains, I have found that natural seems to work better.
A quick first step to remove a red wine stain from clothing when you can't change immediately, is to pour white wine over a red wine stain and then blot it out with paper towel.
In the case of a carpet, cover the stain with salt, talcum powder or corn starch and let it sit for 30 minutes. This will dry the stain and allow you to brush it out later.
When you can change your clothes, treat the red wine stain with a mixture of dish detergent and hydrogen peroxide. Leave it for several minutes before washing. For white wine stains, rinse it with cold water from behind the stain or rub it with dish detergent before washing.
For a carpet, if the previous step did not work totally, dampen the stain with club soda and blot it. If that does not work, you can also try wetting the stain with 1 teaspoon of ammonia mixed in warm water and blot it.
