Most people snap a chalk line for one reason: They need a line to follow. You could be laying tile, or framing a room, or even just cutting a large board. Whatever the reason, being able to snap a chalk line is a very useful skill that is frequently needed for projects around the house.
Items needed:
- Chalk box
- An assistant
- Hammer
- Nail
- Tape measure
Instructions:
- Use a tape measure to measure the length of the length of the line that you will be snapping and place two marks with your pencil, so that you know where to hold the end of the chalk line.
- Secure the metal end of the chalk line at one end of the work surface, with the hammer and nail or an assistant, whichever you prefer.
- When you have the line in place, pull it until the line is tight
- While still holding the line tight, pinch the line and lift straight up.
- Release the line, and depending on what color chalk you have, a blue or red line will appear on your work surface.
Quick Tips:
If no line appears, or if the line is very faint, wind up the line into the chalk box and then try again.
If you still don’t have luck getting a darker line, or getting it to appear at all, you may need to refill your chalk box with more chalk. Refills come in a plastic tube and are fairly inexpensive.
Any chalk box will do--a 5 dollar one is just as good as a 50 dollar one, plus some of the less expensive ones come with a free chalk refill.
