The rising costs of fuel and the ever-pressing need to save the environment from carbon emissions have spurred others to think of other sources of fuel for transportation. One of the most popular fuel alternatives that satisfy these needs is the hydrogen from water that can power automobiles when processed by a hydrogen generator.
A hydrogen generator is a device that either creates hydrogen or one that runs on hydrogen. The hydrogen source can be as common as water, which is extracted through electrolysis; or, it can be through extraction and synthesis of pure hydrogen from compounds like ammonia, gasoline or methanol. Understanding how a hydrogen generator works makes you informed of the alternative sources of fuel for all your energy needs.
- Water reservoir. Water is placed in a water reservoir. The purer the water, the better it will be as source of hydrogen ions. The reservoir must be an insulator, solid enough so that it will not interfere with other components.
- Electrodes. These stainless steel electrodes must have negative and positive terminals. It is actually generic bolts with stainless steel wire wrapped around them through the top of the electrode.
- Electrical coils. This must be roughly similar to the size of the water reservoir. This is punched through the holes of the water reservoir’s lid. Upon supply of electricity through this coil, electrolysis will occur. This procedure separates ions from water.
- Energy source. Depending on the purpose, the energy source that supplies the coils in the water reservoir varies. If it is used in automobiles, an alternator will supply energy. If not, then a battery with sufficient enough voltage will do.
- Collection tubes. These are found at the narrow top of the water reservoir. As the ions separate, they are sucked into the collecting tubes. If it will be used for automobiles, it will be directed to the air intake valve of the engine to maximize fuel burn.
Hydrogen generators have been built by enterprising individuals and private automobile owners to increase their vehicle’s fuel efficiency. Researchers use this to create high-grade hydrogen for techniques that require a rich amount of pure hydrogen to elicit accurate results. Automobile manufacturers have been studying and integrating hydrogen generators in their future models that run on water.
This hydrogen generator is made available as kits but other people prefer to make it themselves. Hydrogen gas produced is highly volatile which means that people who construct their own hydrogen generator must follow instructions carefully lest they risk burning property or harming themselves. There is relative safety to a hydrogen generator when compared to a hydrogen fuel cell, however. A hydrogen fuel cell contains pressurized hydrogen gas in a container used to create electrical current that powers the vehicle.
The presence of a hydrogen generator means it will gather hydrogen from the water supply and feed that gas into the engine to be burned. There is no debate on the fact that gasoline powered engines are still more potent than this type of generator, however.
