How To Use a Front Tine Tiller

Gardening is a common hobby, especially for those with green thumbs.  It requires planting, keeping, and maintaining of plants you grow on your backyard.  But these activities require a lot of labor.  Fortunately, we are living in a modern world that offers so much innovation.

As a gardener, it's best to have a tiller ready.  A tiller is a piece of equipment that prepares the soil for gardening.  It breaks down lumps of soil and makes the quality of the soil better.  It also allows the gardener to filter the soil of weeds and roots that have grown with the use of a rake.

If you are tilling an average size backyard, a front tine tiller works best.  Using a tiller requires skill and some physical strength to make it work.  The following are the steps to use a from tine tiller:

  • Choose an area in your backyard that you want to till, mark it properly so you are guided when tilling.
  • Now ready your tiller by setting the stake at your desired depth. The stake determines how depth the tilling on the soil will and it guides a tiller to maintain same depth.
  • Place your tiller in backyard where you want to start tilling. Start the engine of the tiller by using a choke. Be sure to see the manual on how to specifically start the engine.
  • Let it stay for a minute or two to warn up the engine. By squeezing the engagement handle, start the machine. At this point, strong arms are really required. You don't want to run after your tiller so be sure to have full control on the handle.
  • Be aware of dense chucks of soil because the tiller may jump and be out of the trail. Make passes on the soil multiple times to ensure fine tilling
  • Pass from end to end and side to side. If the machine stops moving forward, try to shake it and push forward. Continue tilling. Make the last pass to loosen up soil you have stepped on while tilling.
  • After tilling the whole area, use a rake to filter weeds and impurities off the soil. Now your soil is ready for planting.
  • Before keeping your tiller, make sure to thoroughly clean it up to keep it in good condition all year round.

A healthy soil is the secret of good output.  Well tilled soil allows for the proper circulation of nutrients and makes it easier for roots to grow.  In choosing a tiller, you should consider factors in your physical environment like the size of an area and how dense the soil is.  It is just the same as any other equipment you have at home; expensive ones are not really the best choice.

For heavy duty tilling needs, a rear tiller is best.  But if you are doing gardening as just a hobby, the front tiller is best.  Remember that generally, bigger machines require intensive labor and fuel to keep them running.
