Vacuum cleaners or hoovers in British colloquial terms, is a simple, yet effective device used to suck up dirt from any surface and stores the collected dirt in a storage bag. Since its invention in 1876 by Melville Bissell of Grand Rapids, Michigan, vacuum cleaners have been developed even more to create the most efficient and effective household cleaning machine.

The usual vacuum cleaner works by the simple principle of air pressure. When the motor inside the cleaner reduces the air pressure in the apparatus, atmospheric pressure pushes the air into the nozzle of the vacuum cleaner. This process makes small particles and dirt get sucked into it and voila, a clean carpet!

There are many different types and configurations of the vacuum cleaner since its invention. We have the upright vacuum, the canister or cylindrical tank type, wet/dry vacs, pneumatic vacs, backpack vacs, robotic vacuum cleaners, some small hand-held vacs and the drum types used in industrial areas. One of the latest additions to these types is the steam vacuum cleaner which continues to prove its advantage over others types. But you may be wondering how to use a steam vacuum and how it works compared to other vacuums.

It's fairly simple. Some steam vacuum cleaners work by applying warm water and some liquid cleaning solution unto the carpet or any other surface and then letting the steam vacuum cleaner suck the water back into the machine. The older prototype to this design used hoses that need to be directly attached to a warm water source like faucets. These types make it uneasy for the user to go for hard-to-reach areas and stairs so other methods were considered. Other steam vacuums are made with spinning brushes in the nozzle to help loosen the dirt prior to sucking it in. Canister type steam vacuum cleaners use a separate nozzle and wand attached to the main unit but the bulk of the canister makes it a burden when moving around the house, especially when moving upstairs.

Other modern steam vacuum models have their own water storage inside the machine, eliminating the need for bulky hoses. The liquid cleaning solution is also mixed up in the water storage to make the process more simplified.

In buying your steam vacuum cleaner, just make sure to ask your dealer for the right type for you and read the instruction manual before using it. Just like any other cleaning device, these types of cleaners also need some maintaining to prolong its life.

While there are professional cleaners who can do the job for you, especially with tough carpets with heavy soil and dirt, the steam vacuum cleaner still is a viable solution and a good investment to save you money in the long-run. Since these types of cleaners consider comfort and ease of use, there's no reason why you shouldn't love and appreciate the power of a steam vacuum cleaner.

The vacuum cleaner is not just an ordinary invention to prove man's grasp of science. This household must-have simplifies the tedious chore of having to manually dust off carpets and rags or any other surfaces. Additionally, vacuum cleaners help make our home a safe, clean and healthy place to live in.
