How To Weld Safely

Welding is an essential part of one's skill set when one's work involves doing machine, engine, or infrastructure building and repair. The greatest danger in welding comes from the sheer amount of heat and brightness involved. Welding can be extremely damaging to the eyes when you do not do it safely. Before even starting a welding job, you should take some precautionary measures to prevent any untoward incidents. Here are some tips on how to weld safely.

Precautionary measures - You must check all the equipments that you will use for welding. Check if there is any damage on your mask, the valves, hoses, the machine and all other essential parts of doing your job. Be sure also to read the user's manual thoroughly before using any welding device so that you will know how to handle it correctly.

Wear the appropriate attire for welding. You must wear an outfit that will cover all of your body since you will be dealing with heat, fumes, and welding rods. Be sure that you will also wear the proper welding mask so that you will not see the ultraviolet light emitted during the welding process.

You should wear your insulated gloves to prevent electrocution and being accidentally hurt. Be sure also that you are preparing your welding area. Get rid of potentially flammable things that can start a fire when sparks get in contact with. Be sure that your area is well ventilated, if possible an open area, where you will not be suffocated by the welding fumes.

While welding - Do not look directly at the object that you are welding even if you are wearing a protective mask. Take time for your eyes to rest since ultraviolet lights are not completely filtered by these masks.

Do not rub your eyes with your hands right after welding.  There are chemical residues that are left in your hands that may be transferred to your eyes and cause eye injury. Have your assistant clean them for you. You can also ask your assistant to hold some items for you while you are doing the job. This will more or less lessen the danger that you will incur when welding alone. You can also teach him how to use a fire extinguisher in case a fire starts while you are welding.

After welding - Make sure that your welding machine is unplugged after you do your work so that you will not be electrocuted with a high voltage of electricity. Be sure also not return all the things that you used to their rightful places, out of reach of children.

Be sure to clean up you working area to ensure that there will be no fire that will start up. Do not wash your hands right after you do the job. This will cause muscle pain in your hands later on when you constantly do this since it is not advisable to wet your hands after putting heat and pressure on them.

Learning how to weld safely will not only save your life but also your property. Do not use any shortcuts in doing your welding jobs.
