How To Winterize a Riding Lawn Mower

The lawn mover is a machine that cuts you lawn using its blades. In the olden times, homeowners used manual grass cutters. However, as technology evolved, so has the lawnmower. Lawnmovers are very important to us especially during springtime. But as the season ends, we often disregard the importance of the machine.

As the season changes, steps have to be done to protect the machine especially before the approach of winter season as this may severely damage the machine. Here's how you can do this to protect your lawn mover during the entire winter season.

Clean it. Remove all the grass that have been stuck on the blades and deck because this can damage it. Drain also the gas and oil from its crank case. Put the oil in bottle for future use but don't apply this to gas. Petroleum has a property that can easily flare up that's why it is important to properly dispose it to avoid any fire accidents in your home and in the near future.

Replace the remove oil and fuel with a new one that has undergone proper mixture then run the engine for a few minutes to cycle the new oil and fuel on the engine's carburetor and wait until it stops on it own, in this way, this will ensure that the tank is empty and the gas has been distributed already on the fuel system.

Check the blades and other parts. Examine first if there has been damage done to it and make sure it is totally fixed before finally storing it away. Check the spark plug by removing the old one and replacing it with a new good one. Pour half an ounce of oil into its cylinder then remove the sparkplug wire. Do these processes on both spark plugs then crank it slowly to distribute the oil.

Grease or lubricate areas where friction occurs. This is important to keep it from getting dry. See your manual on points to lubricate. Check also the screws and bolts to make sure it is tightened especially on the deck and mover. If there has been damaged, replace to avoid it from getting it worst.

Check the battery. Make sure to charge your battery every two months especially during winter season. Once done with charging, disconnect the battery and your riding lawn mover is now ready for storage. But proper precautions should be done in storing the battery. Store it in a warm dry safe place and keep it away from anything that can cause flames and sparks.

Store your riding lawn mover in your store room. Best to store it in a clean and dry room then cover it up with cloth or tarpaulin for further protection. If you don't have a store room, use water proof tarpaulin to cover it up.

The riding lawn mover is quite expensive; all the more reason to make sure it is protected and kept in good working condition. Thus taking the proper precautions in securing it can make it last longer.
