There are many different types of water filters. Some of these filter water for the entire house. These are called point-of-entry water filters. Some water filters are used at the kitchen sink. These are called point-of-use water filters. And other water filters are more portable and can even be taken on trips. Modern refrigerators even have water filtration systems. Most of these filters can handle many gallons of water, but the filters need to be replaced every so often. This is easy to do, but the expense varies according to the type of water filters we use.
One of the reasons people use water filters is because water contains chlorine and many bacteria and contaminants. There are also traces of tranquilizers and other medications in water because waste is eventually recycled. The water in most cities comes from the main river. Most rivers today are too contaminated to even swim in, let alone be used for drinking. While most public water works in cities have adequate filter systems, water filters add an extra level of protection. This is important with today's health-conscious society.
People with compromised immune systems or health problems sometimes rely on water filters. Their bodies may be allergic to chlorine or other contaminants in the water. Pregnant women are advised to stay away from drinks or foods that may contain traces of lead. It can potentially damage the health of the fetus. Health experts usually advise all of these people to drink purified or distilled water. But this can get expensive, plus the chemicals and carcinogens from plastic bottles can leach into the water. Having a good water filter can save them money.
Water filters contain carbon filters. Highly absorbent carbon attracts and traps chemicals and impurities in the water. Some water filters distill the water and others use a reverse osmosis. Still others use ultraviolet light to kill bacteria and other harmful germs. There are advantages and disadvantages to all three. Each individual needs to research them and decide which one will work best for them.
Water filters are also used for swimming pools and other recreational bodies of water. Just as the impurities from water can enter the body by mouth, impurities can also penetrate the skin and leach into the body by osmosis. This can be harmful for babies and small children. As industries continue to discard and spew out more chemicals, water filters will become more important.
